Hugger Mugger Original Tapas
Yoga Mat Review
There is nothing like an original and the Hugger Mugger Tapas really was the first yoga mat. I first purchased these mats in large rolls and cut them apart for student mats. That was way back in the day before yoga mats became something you could buy in a grocery store.
I used those mats as my studio mats for many years and in fact, although I repurposed most of them for various things, here 20 years later, two of those mats from those long ago purchased rolls are still as good as ever in my studio. These mats last.
More Mat Reviews:
Why would you want a Hugger Mugger Original Tapas Yoga Mat?
- You want a basic yoga mat.
- You want a mat that lasts and lasts.
- You want to connect to the history of yoga mats.
This was the first mat made specifically for yoga
Times change. When I first began to do yoga they did not make 'yoga' mats. You can read all about
the trials an tribulations of that era in my post, Mat-titudes. Thankfully those days have passed and
you can find yoga mats everywhere. Yet the first actual yoga mat was this Hugger Mugger Tapas.
I used to
purchase 100 foot rolls of these mats and cut them apart with scissors so I could have yoga mats for my students. I still have a few of those
mats in my studio today because they are durable. They still make them the same way today.
Pros about owning a Hugger Mugger Original Tapas Yoga Mat
These mats are latex free, which is a consideration for those with latex allergies. They are also free of phthalates, they are Eco-friendly and I think I have already mentioned that they are ultra-durable.
They are light weight and relatively inexpensive at under $30.
Cons about owning a Hugger Mugger Original Tapas Yoga Mat
The 3mm of thickness is not that much cushion. Those who need more padding can get around this by doubling the mat under the knees on top of another mat.
These are considered true 'sticky' mats which is great for some, but other people find them annoying underfoot.
Summary
This is a basic mat that will last and last and last. For someone looking to buy their first yoga mat, this mat has all you need. The sticky surface will provide extra traction.
Where to Buy:
I have not seen the Hugger Mugger brand in local retail or big box stores. To get the full selection of colors shop online. I find Amazon's prices and selection to be good and you can also find it at other online yoga retailers.
